For many years Morningstar, a leading investment research firm, published a print catalog of its extensive product and service offerings. For the 2011–12 edition, the cover illustration looked to the firm’s mission to illuminate investing. The Morningstar Style Box, an easy-to-understand visual representation of fund characteristics, served as the invisible scaffold upon which abstract bars hang. As these gradated bars overlap, they build varying polychromatic densities throughout the illustration. The resulting pixelated quality of the illustration recalls a 2005 thermal image of Earth taken by the European Space Agency’s Venus Express orbiter.
